I went to the Servaias' the other evening.
Their cat- which I rescued, a lifetime ago- was very much in evidence, but I couldn't see the pigeon- which is a relatively recent acquisition- anywhere. This didn't really surprise me because the cat is a noisy cat and is always everywhere, peeing on bags and drinking from glasses and biting and scratching and making strange sounds because apparently, she is starved of sex. The poor little pigeon on the hand, is never seen nor heard.
Anyway that evening, I wandered into the little verandah where the pigeon is usually kept (she can't fly). I didn't see the pigeon. Then I wondered if she was dead. It was quite possible. Vikram/Aditya could easily not have mentioned it to me because the pigeon is something that is not usually mentioned. On account of it never being seen or heard.
I felt very bad at the thought of the poor dead pigeon who had been rescued by these kind people only to die.
I went into the living room and asked Vikram when the pigeon had died.
"The pigeon isn't dead," he said, looking puzzled.
"But it's not anywhere around," I said.
"Oh, it's probably under the bed," he said.
"Huh?"
"Under the bed,"
"Oh."
I was about to ask whether it wasn't dangerous for the pigeon and the cat to be loose at the same time. Because cats eat pigeons. I looked at the cat which was too busy licking itself in obscene places to worry about the pigeon. Stupid question.
I learnt that the pigeon likes to wander around the house. But her favourite place is under the bed where she takes long naps and probably tap dances in the bargain. There was a lot in my mind that I tried to put in my mouth but it didn't work, so I just sat quietly on the bed, ignored the cooing sounds that were coming from underneath and ate buttered toast.
Sometimes to keep your own sanity, you have to accept the insane.

Ha ha. Ha.
Sitting and staring.
Sustainable Agriculture. Sustainable Management. Sustainable Development.
Sustainable everything except Sustainable Interest.
I call Minnie. How much have you done? Wait I don't want to know.
She laughs and doesn't sound freaked out. I suppose she's done everything.
How much have you done, she asks.
Four chapters, I say.
She laughs and tells me to stop joking.
And I don't have the guts to tell her
That I've never been more serious about anything in my entire life.

lemon tree- part trini lopez, part trisha dutt.

Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the lemon is impossible to eat.

But the fruit of the lemon will crucify your teeth.

25 random things about me which I didnt want to put up on facebook because it felt too lame.
Not that this isn't.
1. My favourite colour is green.
2. I hate seafood. Including prawn, shrimp and crabs. When I see fish served in a fish like form- you know, with the staring eyes and the tail and the open jaw and the smell, I feel like throwing up. If it's in close proximity then I actually need to dash to the loo.
3. I have a funny sort of anger. Sometimes cold and in control, other times a sort of delirious red hot rage.
4. My favourite period of history is Tudor England. Or to be more accurate, the Tudors. I also like reading about the Mughals. I seem to be drawn to dysfunctional royalty.
5. I can go to sleep at will.
6. Food makes me emotional.
7. Crying people disturb me.
8. I'm not really arrogant, I'm shy.
9. I do have stuck up snob like tendencies though.
10. I could never form a lasting relationship with a boy who doesn't read.
11. If I hadn't been born in January, I would have liked to be born in September- solely because of Louise MacNiece.
12. I think people who always go on about how their life revolves around music are lying. Most of them.
13. I'm extremely possessive about my friends.
14. I'm scared of birds, especially crows.
15. I love- really really really love- my family.
16. I always thought Harry Potter was kind of sexy.
17. Give me a sea and I'm happy.
18. I like being drunk. Wine is my favourite way to get there.
19. I judge people by the way they type.
20. Planes terrify me- especially takeoff.
21. Sometimes I lie awake and imagine the death of someone close to me and just by imagining it, I start crying.
22. I'm a very morbid person.
23. But I have an extremely happy life. Just plain and simple happy.
24. I want curly hair.

advice for over confident people who believe they shall get top marks in isc without having to lift a finger:
Open your political science book.
Trust me, the confidence just withers away.
Trust me, the confidence just withers away.
It's your last Assembly.
The last time you hear them sing a hymn, the last time you mutter the words of the school prayer, not stopping to think what it means, not caring, not giving a shit really. And it's not your fault because you were brought up to be a robot. Taught not to question. Because what happens if you open your eyes and ask a question and they don't know the answer?
But the song is beautiful. Uplifting, almost. Sometimes, if your mind is quiet, you can feel it- a small tingle deep inside you that spreads warmth throughout your soul. But when is your mind ever quiet?
The stories they tell at Assembly are just that. Stories. You hear them, some bore you, some make you laugh and by the time you reach the big door you've forgotten them.
It's your last Assembly. The principal is talking to you. Preparing you for life, in six or seven paragraphs. Trying to compress years and years into seven minutes. She doesn't really care what happens to you. She probably doesn't even know your name. And if she does, you can be sure it's because you get into a lot of trouble.
They clap for you as you walk out. They don't care either. They will one day, but that will be for themselves, when they're the ones walking out to the applause. A lifetime away. Just like it was for you. Embarrassed, you shuffle out. An inglorious exit.
The field looks very green.
I didn't have a Last Assembly. I was late for school and I had to stand outside with a lot of people. Tanvi was one of them. Appropriate maybe, because it was the tail of her dress that I clutched when I walked into Assembly for my first time.
We talked about what we'd do after ISC.
I didn't even notice that I'd missed my Last Assembly till much later. When I did, I didn't really care.
